We will teach you how to make homemade curry paste and turn it into a delicious curry dish, but it will also tell you the story behind the food, as we share our story. So get ready to learn a lot, make some good food, and leave with a belly full of curry!
You’ve probably heard of pho and ramen, but what about khao poon? Khao poon (which means “rice noodle” in Laotian) is a richly aromatic Laotian noodle soup typically made with coconut milk, vermicelli noodles, and chicken or pork, and flavored with red curry, galangal, kaffir lime, garlic, ginger and lemongrass.
Every dish has a narrative and if you follow that narrative close enough and long enough you get to the people behind the dishes. You get to know their stories and their hearts. Food is the ultimate connector of people.
We'll share a dinner with our elder Hmoob farmers from HAFA, tour the beautiful Hmong farms, raffle off some fun kitchen/food prizes, and contribute to a community mural
This will be our 5th and final pop up at The Bird this summer. They have graciously allowed us to take over their spot on Friday evenings from 5pm-9pm. Come join us on August 4th and check out our new summer menu that has been sculpted out from produce and products from local purveyors!
Since this is the last pop-up for the summer (don't worry we'll keep more pop ups coming) we decided to make it special for everyone. We've collaborated with Kim Ly Curry (Instagram: @kimlycurry) who an incredible social influencer in the Twin Cities area. But she's more an just an Instagram Star she knows her food. This menu is reflective of her story as a Vietnamese American and her love for food here in the TC area.
The Bird is a beautiful space on Loring park in Minneapolis that has a wood fire grill and the coolest alley in town. Craft cocktails, wine, and 14 local beers, St.Paul Switchel and Dean's Kombucha on tap!
For this pop-up we're teaming up with the talented Ger Yang (Sous Chef from Zen Box) to bring you a menu that represents his story. Originally from La Crosse (WI), Ger started as sushi chef in Eau Claire, WI then eventually settling in MPLS working at Zen Box with the talented John Ng. He eventually took a little time off to travel through SE Asia and came back with a new passion for the kitchen. Ger's culinary ethos alines so well with Union Kitchen and that is why we're so excited to have him collaborating with us.
This will be our 3rd of 5 pop ups at The Bird this summer. They have graciously allowed us to take over their spot on Friday evenings from 5pm-9pm. Come join us on July 14th and check out our new summer menu that has been sculpted out from produce and products from local purveyors!
We always get asked the question "what is Hmong food"...and they is how we describe it..."Hmong food isn't a TYPE of food, but it's a PHILOSOPHY of food". It is not about the produce or product that makes Hmong food, but it is the process of how the dishes come to be that makes it Hmong.
Join Slow Food Minnesota at York Farm in Hutchinson (MN) on Sunday, May 21 to celebrate the season’s first wild offerings.
After our first LOCO DUUK event at Cook St. Paul we're taking our pop-up to South Minneapolis. We will be set up in Gigi's Cafe (822 W 36th). All the pop-ups will be returning, Lola Rosa, Cook St Paul, Dumpling, and Union Kitchen.
